The Cloisters Museum

A branch of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters is devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe,
was assembled from architectural elements, both domestic and religious, that largely date from the twelfth through the fifteenth century.

It is located in northern Manhattan in Fort Tryon Park.

Monks from the Cistercian abbey at Norte Dame de Pontaut in Aquitaine once gathered for daily meetings in the 12 century enclosure. At the time of its purchase in the 1930’s by a Parisian dealer, the column supports where being used to tether farm animals.
